October 2021 Update
President’s Address
The past few months have definitely been difficult. It is now the second time that we have had to go through these difficult lockdowns and restrictions. Unfortunately, with that repetition we noticed a decreased motivation and interest in virtual events, which is completely understandable, we were also not as interested in attending these things. As a result, the Energy Club did not reach the expectations that we had for ourselves this year and hold all the events that we would have liked. But we will be looking to change this for the rest of 2021 and make 2022 a strong year for the club.
October is almost over, and things are looking up. We know the next few weeks are going to be a busy period for you all, but we are bringing you our Expo as an event to look forward to! We will now be hosting our Brighter Future Expo on Friday November 26th, just after the end of exams. With everything that has happened over the past months, we have had to make some unfortunate changes to our event, but we will still be holding our Energyhack and poster competition. This event will be a great opportunity to have some fun with your friends and collectively be involved in coming up with solutions to energy and sustainability related issues. It will also be a great chance to use and apply some of the information that you had been focusing on for the past couple weeks. And if you needed some more incentive, the winning team of our Energyhack will be awarded a $1000 cash prize and our winning poster entry will also be awarded a $1000 cash prize! For more information about these two competitions read below.
2021 Student Expo: A Brighter Future
energyhack
Our Energyhack is a great chance to apply your knowledge, test some ideas and most importantly be creative! Some of society’s significant problems, such as energy and sustainability, have remained challenges for decades. To be able to effectively address these issues we need some ingenious solutions. We know you are capable of that, and that is what we want from you!
This year in our Energyhack we will be addressing one of society’s biggest problems: building a city that is renewable and sustainable. We want you to come up with a plan to build the next city that will be powered by renewable energy, have a fair and functional energy market for consumers and producers, robust and clear energy policies, and much, much more! In essence, we want you to come up with the necessary ideas and foundations that society could use as the basis for the future.
Creating a solution for our Energyhack will need a breadth of knowledge, so it doesn’t matter what your academic background is. Everyone will have an equal opportunity to participate. You can bring strong ideas about how you will supply renewable energy, how your city will govern energy or sustainability, or even how you will appropriately deal with your waste. All you need to have to participate is ideas and a passion.
We know that this will be a challenge, but we are excited for Monash students to work on this, because we have faith that you can come up with a solution.
More exact details about the problem statement and the requirements of the solution will be released once the teams have been finalised. For more information about the Energyhack, click here.
poster competition
Monash students are some of the most capable students and undertake some cutting-edge research. However, due to COVID-19, the opportunities for students to highlight their work at conference has become limited, so we wanted to create a chance for you to do this.
If you are a Monash student and have or are conducting some energy or sustainability related research, then we want you to submit a poster of your research into our poster competition. This will be a great chance for you to not only show your work to a wide audience, but also highlight the great research that Monash does. Entering our competition is not only a great way to showcase your work, but the winning entry will also receive a $1000 cash prize. For more information about our poster competition, click here.
Leadership Positions
As 2021 is ending, the tenure of the current committee is coming to a close. We will soon be opening up applications for leadership positions in the club. The Monash Energy Club needs some passionate and dedicated students to take charge in 2022 and make it a great year. Being apart of the committee is a great opportunity, and it allows you the chance to liaise with industry representatives and have an active role in leading student engagement with opportunities beyond their degree. If you are interested in taking on a leadership role within the club, make sure to watch this space!
