July 2021 Update

We have all had a lot to deal with in the past month. The Monash Energy Club hopes that everyone has been coping and managing through the COVID-19 lockdown and looking forward to the return of the semester. This semester, we have a lot planned and we are excited to be sharing some of the events that we have planned for you! Make sure to keep up to date with the club and join in with our activities.

MEC X MAD Debate

We are excited to announce a new event that we will be hosting this semester. In partnership with the Monash Association of Debators, we will be hosting a debate. This will be a great chance for you to participate and hear some interesting opinions around the renewable energy space. This debate will be held in Week 3, so watch this space, because we will be releasing more information soon!

Energy, Weather and Forecasting

Energy, weather and forecasting are slowly all becoming interconnected. The abilities of the weather and forecasting sectors are having some strong impacts and implications on the growth and function of the energy sector. We recently explored this area and talked to some experts in this field about how this interconnection is developing, how it is influencing changes in renewable energy and the potential for students to get involved. The continued growth and connection between these fields demonstrates that the solutions needed for securing a future with energy are multifaceted and reliant on a lot of different fields working together. So even if you are not directly working on an energy related study, the knowledge that you are gaining and the work that you do could have strong impacts towards developing the energy sector. These interviews also mark the return of Grind’n the Grid Podcasts! It has been a long wait, but we are excited to bring these podcasts back to you! Be sure to tune in and hear about these interesting developments for the energy sector.

Check out the interviews we did with:

  • Dr. Hannah Bloomfield, a postdoctoral researcher at the University at Reading. Dr. Bloomfield conducts research on the impact of climate on power systems

  • Dr. Christoph Bergmeir, a senior Lecturer at Monash University in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. Dr. Bergmeir pursues research in machine learning and the use of forecasting for energy and retail systems.

2021 Student Expo: A Brighter Future

Registrations for our student Expo has opened. Make sure to register to attend. It will be a great opportunity to learn about the impactful research that is being conducted by fellow students at Monash. If you also unsure about what you want to do after you finish your studies, this will also be a great opportunity to scope out if research at Monash is something you want to pursue.

Submission of abstracts have also opened for our expo. If you are interested in presenting your work or submitting a poster, or even both, make sure you submit an abstract soon! With international conferences limited, this will be a great opportunity to share your research to a wider audience. Poster submissions will also enter a competition, so be sure to submit an abstract!

A highlight of our expo will be our 2021 Energyhack. We have had great successes from our two previous hackathons, so don’t miss out this time!. Our 2021 Energyhack will be focusing on one particular aspect of renewable energy, with the winning team being awarded a prize. Registrations for the Energyhack will open soon, so be sure to watch this space!
