Our Past Month
Grounded Makes a Return
Our Grounded webinar series came back with full force this year, starting with our Grounded: Growing from CO2 series. This series encompassed three webinars covering “CO2 Utilisation and Opportunities in Decarbonisation, “A Chemical Pathway to CO2 Use” and “A Biological Pathway to CO2 Use”.
We were fortunate enough to have some leading academics and some promising students, present about what is happening with these topics, the future of these areas, and how other students can get involved. These webinars were a great chance to learn more about the leading ways to utilise CO2 and turn it into a useful product, working to resolve one of our biggest problems! Carbonhack 2021!
Some great ideas came out of our Carbonhack! We had a great turnout to the event, and it was encouraging to see how students were collaborating together to produce some creative solutions to using CO2. The solutions ranged from “Magic Concrete'' that incorporated CO2, to developing a comprehensive carbon network that worked to symbiotically link different markets together. We congratulate our winners Mycoblock, for presenting a creative idea that worked to pre-emptively utilise CO2 through redirecting the source of the CO2. It was exciting to hear the potential and their plan for using fungus to beneficially convert CO2 forming crop waste into useful building and packaging materials.
We, at the Monash Energy Club, learnt a lot through this event and it was inspiring to see the ideas that students were formulating to solve one of our major problems! We thank all the students who participated and for the work they put into these solutions. From the ideas we heard, it just goes to show that our generation can make an impact and we can and will find a lasting solution!
What’s happening next month?
On Tuesday 18th May, we will be hosting an industry night in partnership with RESS. This night will be an unmissable event where we will be bringing together students and energy companies.
Even though we are partnering with the Resources Engineering Students Society, don’t worry if you’re not an engineer. You will still be able to connect with the companies we have coming, and find out more about the career opportunities they have available!
